Do ADHD Medications Lead To Addictions

Do ADHD Medications Lead To Addictions ADHD medication can be an important part of a comprehensive treatment plan for kids with ADHD. When a child or teen responds well to medication, the positive impact on almost every aspect of their life is profound. They do better in school, with friends, and at home, and their self-esteem often greatly improves. However, many parents are understandably reluctant to have their child take medication for ADHD. One of the biggest worries is that ADHD medication will lead to addiction down the line. Fortunately, theres been a great deal of research examining the effects of ADHD medication on future drug addiction. Numerous studies funded by the National Institute of Mental Health and the National Institute on Drug Abuse have found that ADHD treatment with stimulant medications does not lead to drug abuse during adolescence or adulthood. In fact, 11 studies showed either no increased risk or a decreased risk for substance use problems in individuals who were treated with stimulant medication. One study showed a slightly increased risk for later substance abuse only when ADHD medication was started earlier in childhood (although there are a number of additional factors that may have contributed to this finding beyond the use of ADHD medication). While research suggests that taking medication to treat ADHD in childhood or adolescence may protect against substance use problems during the teen and adult years, some studies suggest that treatment response to the medication may also be an important factor. Specifically, the kids and teens who had the best medication response (meaning their ADHD symptoms were well managed by their ADHD medication) are the least likely to go on to develop substance abuse problems. Overall, studies suggest that ADHD medication treatment may protect against later substance abuse especially when a child or teens ADHD symptoms are well managed by their medication. This finding is extremely important because teens and adults with ADHD (when compared to teens and adults without ADHD) are at higher risk for substance abuse problems overall. While the exact reasons for this risk are unknown, there are several factors that probably contribute. Specifically, the impulsivity associated with ADHD likely puts individuals at increased risk, as does higher rates of a family history of substance abuse, and the possibility that teens and adults whose mental health symptoms arent well managed with medication or behavioral treatment are essentially self-medicating with alcohol, marijuana, or illicit drugs at teens or adults. Effective treatment with ADHD medication is just one of the many routes parents can take to help protect their child from future substance use problems. Effective academic and social supports for kids with ADHD may buffer against future drug abuse, as can strong and supportive family relationships. So, if you are leery of having your child take ADHD medication, or if your child simply doesnt respond to or tolerate ADHD medication, then its especially important that they receive extra behavioral supports and treatment to help minimize the impact of their ADHD symptoms on their current functioning and future development. Things to Avoid on Social Media While Looking for a New Job

Things to Avoid on Social Media While Looking for a New Job via Pixabay Posting Controversial Content The best rule of thumb about posting content on social media is that if you wouldn’t want your grandmother to see it, then don’t post it. The Internet is open to millions of people to look at what you are posting. You don’t want an embarrassing picture or status out there for everyone to see forever. Controversial content can include inappropriate photographs from weekend partying to political opinions expressed in a status. Remember that you want your social media to reflect who you are as an employee to your future boss. Using Incorrect Grammar When texting and social media first became popular, using slang and shortened words was the cool thing to do. This faded out quickly once full keyboards were available on cell phones. Now, it’s important to have correct grammar and full sentences on your social media. You want to show your future employer that you know how to write well and can effectively communicate an idea or story. These are valuable skills when it comes to working in an office. Difference Personalities Different  social media platforms are used for different things. LinkedIn is to grow your professional network and get career advice. Twitter is great for keeping up with your favorite celebrities or decrypting hidden messages in 140 characters from your crush. Instagram is for the artsy people who love to tell stories through photographs. The list goes on. While each platform has different goals, it’s important to keep your personality the same over each platform. Employers don’t want to scroll through your LinkedIn and see what a dedicated worker you are only to scroll through your Twitter profile and read your actual internal thoughts throughout the day. Paint a clear picture of who you are in different ways over these different platforms. Just be yourself. via Pixabay Clearing or Deleting Your Social Media Do not delete all of your social media accounts while looking for a new job. If a hiring manager cannot find you online, it looks like you have something to hide. Most everyone has some sort of online presence now so it may look strange if you do not. It will look even more suspicious if you delete everything on your social media. This definitely tips off a future employer that you once had content that may not have been appropriate. Negative Attitude You don’t want to make it seem like you have a negative attitude through what you post on social media. While we may have the occasional bad day and want to share it with people on social media, make sure you also balance those posts out with positive things. When a hiring manager looks at your social media, you want to give them the sense that you are fun and easy to work with. Nobody wants to be stuck with a negative coworker. Incriminate Yourself Go through photos and statuses you have been tagged in by friends over the last few years. Some photos may have slipped your mind until you come upon them and realize that you wouldn’t want a future employer to see it. Untag yourself from controversial photos or statuses. Scroll through any memes or articles that you may have shared over the years. While they may have been funny to you a couple of years ago, it may not be funny now that you are looking for a new job. Inappropriate Comments While you may not be able to control what people post on your page or comment on your content, you can go through and monitor it. We all have that one friend or family member who feels the need to make comment inappropriate on our photos or statuses. It may be all in good fun, but it’s probably not something you want your future employer to see. Ask your friend to stop posting inappropriate comments or block them for a little while until you’ve found a new job. Prepare Your Social Media   Now that you know some things to avoid on social media while looking for a new job, it’s time to go act on it! Go through your old photos and statuses and delete anything that may be inappropriate. Keep one personality throughout all platforms and try to come off as a positive person. The most important thing of all: just be yourself.

Elizabeth, age 10 Neelam Neotia, Kumon Instructor Elizabeth, age 10: Neelam Neotia, Kumon Instructor Elizabeth’s parents never let the odds prevent their daughter from being her personal best. Elizabeth was born with chronic lung disease, a heart condition and digestive problems. Her childhood years have been consumed with in-home therapies, surgeries and hospitalization. Kosair Charities helped fill the family’s health coverage gaps for Elizabeth’s treatments. Elizabeth can now do things she couldn’t do before, like swimming, her new favorite pastime. Her progress has been so inspiring that she was selected to be a Kosair Kid for the charity, appearing in their commercials, newsletters, and billboards. “She has come so far, but there are still areas of growth needed,” says her mom Jennifer. Elizabeth enrolled in Kumon because she was below her second grade level in math and reading. “I set a goal to get on the honor roll at school and for the first time ever, I did it,” beams Elizabeth, now a proud fifth grader. Her Kumon Instructor, Neelam adds “Elizabeth is very eager to learn new things and works hard to achieve the next goal.” Elizabeth describes her academic experience in sharp contrast to her pre-Kumon days â€" she’s more confident in her learning, raising her hand more often in class.  Homework is no longer frustrating and she can balance school and extracurricular activities like Kumon. “I hardly ever miss a Kumon (class) and I hope that I can stay and complete the program,” she says. Elizabeth wants to be a doctor when she grows up. Challenges throughout her life have put her tenacity to the test. A test she continues to pass with flying colors.
